The Risks And Rewards of Domain Name Investing

Posted by Admin on Tuesday, February 02, 2010 - 04:18 PM

One domainer I know has the habit of emailing me when he is thinking of acquiring domains. I find this curious, because the domains we have developed have suffered from his lack of grooming. How can someone understand an Estibot estimate if they are ignorant of what Alexa ranking is? I do not say that Alexa rankings are the be-all and end-all of domaining existence. But to claim the value of a domain name that lies available for purchase according to the perceived value of one line (of an Estibot) when you don't understand the definition of the value a few lines below it, that is part of the same valuation, is spurious.

Can Estibot predict the ultimate resale utility of a potential domain acquisition? If it could, wouldn't we all be millionaires?

This is a domainer who refused to augment his content or add to his link directory. He will trawl websites looking for domains when he has viable hosted sites that need detailing. But I get a fresh email on every action item. Until I feel this guy is developing his own domains at least as hard as I am trying to develop mine, why should I pander to his ad hoc Q & A session? I am willing to be part of the learning curve of many newbies, but there comes a time when spoon feeding is over. I see no reason to give blanket assurances about "crystal ball" values.

I have no undisputed authority over what domain is a good (read: guaranteed) elevated resale return. While I browse logos and article directories he ignores "all that" and then wonders why he isn't getting hefty Google payments weekly.

What irks me about these emails is that this associate is eager to lay the risk of his domaining decisions in my inbox, where they don't belong. Why doesn't he just man up and assume the risk of his own domain buying? Domaining stands on the skill of the domainer. Why does my judgment determine the thumbs up or thumbs down of his domain acquisitions? One must answer their personal instinct about a domain, or turn over absolute control to their domain portfolio officer. I can only be responsible for my own domain project planning and ideas. The boundary can get blurred with all the qualified advice that goes flying around (for very little encouragement) on the domain forums and blogs. In the world of domaining, you are on your own. Make your financial decisions accordingly.
