PostNuke content management system is a little piece of open source software that I have been using since 2003. I have built many a website for my clients, and for myself using this CMS. But when getting together with other web developers few seem to know it. Most know of its origin product, PHP-Nuke, but don't know much beyond the name of PostNuke. PostNuke has been in constant progression since July 2001.
My aim in this article is to detail some reasons why I believe you too may enjoy and also come to love, using PostNuke as your CMS.
First off, PostNuke will run equally well on a Windows server, as it will on a Linux/Unix driven one. The installation is done via an online installer, or you could do it manually. It is much easier to do it online - especially for new users. The guided install will check all your file and folder permissions and even create the database for you. Don't forget to delete any install folder files!
Once your new PostNuke website has been installed you can get to work right away on creating your website vision. PostNuke has many established coders working for some years on PostNuke specific themes, modules, blocks and code enhancements. These varied choices allow you to have immense flexibility in setting up your website.
One of the better points of PostNuke is that it comes ready to go right out of the box. A standard install comes with a full and complete admin control panel, website statistics, banner module, polls, news module, links directory, rss, mobile content, mailer, comments, and so much more. With the large and growing database of extra modules you can also easily add complete forums, calendars, shopping carts, newsletters, subscriptions, blogs, file sharing and more. Most of these modules are also free and well maintained.
There are also many theme makers for PostNuke, or you can easily make your own. PostNuke uses Xanthia theme engine as its standard theme generator, but you can also use the free or paid deluxe version of Autotheme for your themes.
Another great attraction of PostNuke is their solid attention paid to security. Yes, PostNuke has had some security holes identified, but they really are few and far in between. And unlike some of their direct competitors, they release patches very quickly, so you never have to be worrying if your website is about to be hacked and defaced while waiting months for a patch or update to be released.
If you do run into trouble there are reams of online documentation, and they also operate a help forum where many developers and users of PostNuke help those in need.
PostNuke is nearing a real milestone release - .8 - one in which they completely rid themselves of their PHP-Nuke code legacy. The new release will catch the Internet's attention with the solid coding standards, adherence to proper web-standards, groundbreaking security and flexibility and their incorporation of the very latest in web development tools such as Ajax.
Finally take note that this website that you are reading this article on is also created on the PostNuke content management system. The theme was a free release that we moulded to our own needs, and all the modules used are free releases or part of the standard install.

Watch for parts two and three on PostNuke where I will detail the best modules and some tips and tricks to get the most of PostNuke.
